April 27 – A College (sort-of) Weekend

Posted by SplitSuit On April - 27 - 2010

I am so insanely exhausted right now, but I wanted to get a blog post up before I start my day. I will start back from the other day:
.
Friday:
Drove over to Albany and got there around 9:30p. Everyone showed up roughly around the same time which was pretty damn perfect. So nice to see most of my friends from college that I haven’t seen for almost 2 years. We ended up playing a few hours of flippong that night (which did include some 16s of Red Dog for laughs), then bummed in the hot tub until 4a. I will admit that I have lost my college drinking tolerance, but as is expected I suppose.
.
Saturday:
Woke up around 10a and got a start on the day. We did breakfast as a house and then jumped over to the park. It is official…if Katie offers you directions, just ignore her =). Ended up taking a drive through the ghetto of Albany and finally found the park about 40 minutes later. O well, driving adventures are always fun. Dan and Tom ended up teaching us to play “KanJam” which was quite fun although I sucked horribly at it.
.

.
After a few hours of that and enjoying the nice weather, we headed home to grab some lunch. Along the way we found a garage sale and decided to peruse. Actually found some ridiculous stuff (batman mask, jaiger cowboy hat, a VHS board game, etc) and used all the stripper bills in my pocket to buy useless crap. Got home an hour later, at some food, played another game of flippong, then headed out for dinner/laser tag.
.
Laser tag was a blast, especially while drunk and sloppy (and no, I did not do any of the driving to, nor from, laser tag, lol). Got some food over at Chilis, then headed back for more drinking games and hot tub. Officially, one of the better ways to spend a weekend.
.
Sunday:
Did breakfast as a house then we all jumped out around 1p. I decided to go visit my friend up at UVM because it had been awhile and I wanted to break up my drive (would be 3hrs to UVM, and then 2.5hr from UVM to my place in NH). The drive up to UVM was actually kind of nice, very back roads, and I also got to take a ferry to cross some randomly river. Wish I had my camera for it as it was very scenic, but O well.
.

.
Got up there around 4p and headed out to get dinner at RiRa’s (some Irish place in their downtown area). Picked up two 24′s and headed up to play some drinking games. Played some basic Kings, and I also invented a drinking version of Crazy Pineapple. Very cool drinking people I will say, as one had some great music and they were all intelligent and laid back.
.
Monday:
Woke up way late at 1p and left to go over to NH. Was a quick 2.5hr drive which felt good. Just chilled for the night as I was super tired (and still am). A certain someone has been texting me for hours every night and messing up my beauty sleep schedule =). Finally got caught up on all of my emails and PMs, and ended up getting a full work week, lol. And on that note, I need a nap before coaching starts. Hope all is well!

April 23 – Going To NY

Posted by SplitSuit On April - 23 - 2010

So the 22nd is finally over, thank God. What a terrible day. Ended up having to wake up early, got called by my college loan people (which always puts me in a lovely mood), and then went on to have a shitty day. Went down to visit my brother’s place for the day which was alright. Just had a beer with my dad and then got out of there. I ended up being given a video slot for May on CardRunners, so I had to get a video done ASAP, and after 4hrs of grinding, couldn’t even manage a good hour of recording.
.

k

.
Ended up going 1/32 on flopped sets, which didn’t help at all, lol. Also made a dumb 6b ship where I was being too aggro, and got it ai AA v QQ and lost. The rest of the session was just bleed, where nothing happened, but nothing went right either. Woke up early this morning and got a session recorded which worked just fine. Ended up making a mistake when I CB in a 4b pot on a pretty nasty board, but the rest of the video was pretty good imo. So hopefully it gets received well, and then I can start doing more theory videos, rather than live play videos which are always more hit or miss imo.
.
And on that note, im off. I’m driving over to Albany to hang out with college friends tonight, and then bouncing back to NH at some point after that. Hope yall enjoy the weekend!

April 21 – Cali To Boston

Posted by SplitSuit On April - 21 - 2010

So my vacation is going very well thus far. I am a little pissed off that I got sick already, but it is what it is. I’m pretty sure I ended up getting a sinus infection or something of the like, which is taking me out daily. But I will start this from a few days back.
.
Saturday:
.
Got to the airport at about 7a. No problems getting through security, but I was a little shocked to see the airport extremely busy at that hour. Caught a quick 1hr plane ride over to Long Beach and waited for my connector. Turned out to be a small little airport with no wifi in it, so I took the time to write some more of my book. Pounded out the rest of the isolation chapter and cleaned up some more of the CB-ing section as well. Ended up buying a $16 sandwhich as well, which I only note for the insanity that is paying $16 for a cheap ass airport sandwhich. But a guy has to eat…
.
Got to SFO at about 3p and waited a lil bit for J4 to pick me up as he was running a little late. We ended up playing terminal-tag because SFO has like 3 different ground transport levels for some odd reason. Finally got picked up and went out to Golden Gate park to play some disc golf. Ended up doing pretty well considering that I haven’t played that course in like 2.5yrs. And that the course is muuuuuuuch harder than the very wide open course that we play in Vegas. O well. Did Gordon Biersch for dinner after that, picked up my uncle and cousin, then headed down to Monterey to sleep.
null
.
Sunday:
.
Ended up getting to sleep in a bit (which was a change of pace being that my little cousin loves to wake me up as early as possible to play video games). Got some donuts in the ol belly then played some Wii Resort (fun little game that has events like archery and basketball on it) with my cousin. We then all shot over to the middle school to play some more disc golf with J4′s friends. Very janky little course, but fun none the less. Even though my lil cousin got very upset with it being that he was by far the worst (but what do you expect when you are 9 and everyone else is 20+!?)
.

.
Got home, checked some emails for the first time on the trip, and then had some steak tips for dinner. Ended up passing out early because I was starting to feel a little shitty. Was pretty awful sleep I will say, mostly due to tossing and turning all night for no reason.
.
Monday:
.
We woke up pretty early and got over to the aquarium. Ended up meeting up with one of my uncle’s friends and her daughter Sam who were in town and doing the college interview process with some schools. Sam is looking at schools for something oceanic, so she seemed to be in 7th-heaven at the aquarium….as well as my little cousin who still loves them.
.
JellyFish
.
After that we drove down to Aptoss to relax at the resort for the night. Got some swimming in (although I mostly just bummed in the jacuzzi) and then prepped for night plans. Ended up going down to the beach and sparked a bonfire and just ate smores and drank all night. Good times for sure, although it was tough to stay up for it all due to feeling like hell still.
.
Tuesday:
.
Flew back to Boston most of the day. Got home and crashed out
.
Wednesday:
.
Woke up early yet again and went over the mechanics to drop off my dad’s car. Apparently he thought a fan had blown and was making noise, but it turns out the wheel bearings were so fucked up that his wheel could have fallen off at any time (and it had been this way for a week). Luckily it got fixed up though.
.
Spent some time with my mom and did lunch with her and her BF. Then grabbed my car, picked up my dad, and then visited my brother’s grave for a bit. We had some time to spare so we went over to the middle school and ended up tossing discs for a bit. There were no baskets there, so we just called out different targets and fired away at them. Was actually quite fun despite the wind, and he did alright for his first time out. Now I am just catching up on some emails and planning out my night. Hope all is well!

April 14 – No Complaints

Posted by SplitSuit On April - 14 - 2010

2 more days and then it is bounce time. Work has been dwindling down, and I have been getting some more time to get just relax. In that time I have been cranking through the first and second season of Arrested Development. I have also been getting out and getting some disc golf in every day, and although I am way off my game, I am still enjoying being outside. I have also been framing some more chapters for my book. As it stands it is about 18 chapters, although I put a crapton of things in certain chapters (like the CB-ing section has everything from textures to facing CBs to polarized CBing, etc). I am enjoying the process thus far, and hope to have most of the book, if not all of it, done by the time I get back from vacation.
.
I am incredibly tired due to waking up fairly early the last few days for early students. I am going to crash out in a few minutes but wanted to leave a playlist for today. This is a mix of some music I have been listening to more recently while chilling. If you don’t like soft indie music, this will probably not be for you.
.

.
Hope all is well!

April 11 – Awesome Weekend

Posted by SplitSuit On April - 11 - 2010

This weekend just flew by. Thursday I took the day easy. Had 2 coaching sessions and had my chef come over the first time. 100% best thing ever =) Friday I had 3 sessions and got a text from SammyG that he and Gman were down at Aria if I wanted to drop by. So I decided to go chill down on the strip for the night. Had some drinks with them which was a good time. Decided after that, as I had some time between leaving them and dinner plans, that I would go play some live over at the Venetian
.
Tables were standard good for a Friday night. I sadly just found myself card dead the entire time. My biggest pot was one where I called a raise (with 2 limpers to me) with 76s from the BB. The flop was 973r. I check and everyone checks. The turn is a 4 and I bet 1/3 pot and get 2 callers. I check an 8 river and win the pot at showdown. Everything else was just bricking flops and some bad textures in HU pots. I am looking forward to the summer and playing some more live while meeting up with more 2p2rs. But I have a couple months till that happens.

sushi samba

.
After that session I went over to Sushi Samba with one of my protege’s and his family. It is official, I love that place. Had some amazing sushi and was nice to mix poker talk plus meeting new people and learning about them as well. After dinner I decided I was going to just head home as I was fairly tired and didn’t feel like putting in a session in that state. Got home, crashed out, and woke up early for a student on Saturday.
.
After my student I ended up taking an addy and cranking through my Stox video (which was a day late already, whoops). I decided to a video on some connections between economics and poker. Went over things like the law of diminishing return and pareto principle, etc. I think the video came out fairly well, and even though it took me an insanely long time to fully edit it…I feel good that it is done. That video gets released later this week, and I have one more video the week after that (which is already recorded).
economics in poker
.
Other than that, everything is going well. Have a ton of work to do this week before I jump out…but I will get it all done. I also finally got my copy of “DUCY?” in the mail and I hope to get that read on vacation. Hope all is well!

April 7 – Almost Vacation Time!

Posted by SplitSuit On April - 7 - 2010

And I am in dire need of one, lol. This week is cruising along slowly actually. I ended up getting a ton more hours of coaching than I had originally anticipated, which in turn is slowing up my script, in turn slowing down finishing this video for Stox. But, things are going better and I am focusing on not letting this stupid depression get me. Working out, staying motivated with working, and keeping my brain incredibly active is helping tremendously.
.

.
I actually had lunch with Ed Miller the other day which was really cool. Just talked poker business stuff mostly, and it’s always nice to talk to someone who has been around the block for maaaaaaaaany more years than I have. Certainly helped me frame some of my thoughts on certain things, and gave me another excuse to go eat at Noodle Asia =) I also have plans to meet up with one of my proteges this weekend (hurray sushi!) and possibly Sammy and Gman from the forums. Should be a good weekend to say the least.
.
Past that, everything is going well. Got out and got some disc golf in the last few days (struggling around the 59ish range due to taking a week off) and also getting some gym time in. I can so easily fall back into the routine of just grinding all day that I forget to go exercise, or at the very least get outside. I like that I am forcing myself to get the fuck out every day and enjoy some of the weather before it gets stupid hot here.
.
The video for Stox is coming along very well. I think it will be a cool video for people to see poker from a more theoretical point of view and frame things differently. The video is drawing comparisons between economics and poker, which I have written about previously, but never in this kind of detail. Hopefully I can finish the script tomorrow between sessions, record it tomorrow night, and then finish the editing and producing on Friday. Tis the goal. And on that note…time to play a lil Halo and then crash out. Hope all is well!

April 4 – I Really Do Dislike April

Posted by SplitSuit On April - 4 - 2010

I’m pretty sure I have said this before, but in case I haven’t, I hate April. April is my brother’s birthday month, and even though this is the 3rd year coming, it still hits me like a ton of fucking bricks. Not even minutes into the first day of the month I already started feeling depressed, and sadly, it is only getting worse. I am doing my best to take care of myself (eating, trying to set a sleep schedule, working out, etc)…but my body isn’t cooperating. It is taking me the better part of 3hrs to fall asleep any given night, and I am getting very restless sleep. Then all day I experience pain (headaches, body stress, etc) which makes day time hours hell. *Sigh* This is why I don’t play all of April when possible.
.
Speaking of playing, I did try to record a video for 2p2 at 10NL. Sadly, I got really tilty through it and decided to start shoving PF for no reason. (See why I don’t play in April? lol). Maybe I will make another one at some point this week…we shall see. The rest of last week was spent coaching mostly. Also finished up 3 Stox videos (did a review of a 50NL RUSH session that I played and then 2 sweat sessions of students). I am actually really happy with how they turned out. I also plotted my next video. I think I am going to do a video on how economics relate to poker and what we can learn from it. Everything from betsizing to where money comes from in poker. Should be interesting…and I think might help some people be able to visually see some things that could seem very complex.
.
g
.
This week I have 1 video to do, about 10hrs of coaching planned, and then relaxing to try to do. I have also decided that I will probably start writing another book, though not poker related. I want to do a book that is a mix between “Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs” and a self help book….so a motivational book that is written with random samples of my brain and thoughts. I am thinking I will title it “Why You Suck At Life”…but I suppose that might be harsh, so maybe “Why We Suck At Life” would be better =) I just have a bunch of stuff I want to get out, and I time is always a factor in life…so sooner seems better than later.
.
f
.
Past that…everything is fine I guess. I got my plane tickets for my mid-April to mid-May vacation. I am very much looking forward to that…esp seeing my cousins out in Cali and then seeing some college friends after that. And on that note…I am off to get some sleep and up for a day of coaching. Hope all is well!

April 1 – New Month!

Posted by SplitSuit On April - 1 - 2010

So March went by super quickly. I ended up doing 40hrs of coaching (before I add in protege hours) and with video, email, writing hours…coaching looked like a full time job, lol. And speaking of work, this week is killing me. It will be about a 20hr week by the time it is done. I have done 7hrs of coaching already, and still have 8hrs left to go. I also did 2 videos, ended up scrapping an entire video, and have another video to do, lol. Endless work it feels like sometimes.
.
I also want to take this time to give a well deserved congrats to my protege program (and honorary member) for a job very well done this month. Things are starting to click and results are starting to show. I am very very happy to see this. While we are by no means finished working and tweaking, I am incredibly proud of the effort and work put into everything thus far. And here I cheers to yet another month of solid progression!
.
Also finally ended up paying my taxes. Who doesn’t love writing that multi-bankroll check every single year to our favorite government? I randomly decided to do them one night when I was in a funky mood…but I guess it’s whatever it takes. I will say, TurboTax is the shit. Took like no time at all, and I feel relatively comfortable in the “savings” it was able to find. I do find it sad that I never plan on having a year where I get a refund…but it is what it is I suppose.
.

null

.
And with that being said, I am heading to sleep. I am insanely tired and have to be up for my 10a/noon/2p students. Hope all is well!
