Oh, yeah: I've known people who do that, but it's usually folks who have never been west of Framingham, and that was only once when they got on the wrong bus. I've tried explaining to them that there's a whole rest of a country out there where you can have an $8/hr job and actually make a living, but their eyes often just glaze over. They'd just rather be puttering about in a small land and constantly broke. Go figure.

Then in the next class up, you've got the people who bought homes and got endless HELOC's from the bank and ended up spending their homes and then some during the last boom. I never drank the kool-aid, but now my tax dollars are hard at work bailing all the involved idiots out. Ah, but don't get me started.

I'm in east Watertown, just on the Belmont line and a stone's throw from Cambridge. My jobsite is out in the 'burbs, so the commute takes a stretch of time, but I couldn't go back to suburban living after getting so bored of it in my youth, so this semi-urban setting works for me.

Get well soon, amigo.

Housing is one of those things that is worth the money at the end of the day. I tried cutting corners for a long time, living with deadbeat roommates and then alone in a cheaply remodeled attic. Now I live alone in a tiny house in a quiet neighborhood -- but I can walk to a bar in five minutes, a Star Market in ten, and can take the T downtown in 40, and it's worth every penny. I have my space and when I want to be around people, they are right there too. Now, hah, I even have a dishwasher and I don't know how I ever lived without one.

Good luck on the search!
